Reaching out 10 mile in each direction from Hancock, MD, this trail lets one view the C and O Canal at times, takes you by an old apple orchard, and lets you examine some of the most unique rock formations you will see. You are almost certain to see deer off to the sides of the trail as well. One nice thing about this trail is that, if you are doing a long ride on the C and O, it offers a reprieve from riding on the towpath and lets you enjoy pavement for once. What I like to do when in this area, is to ride out to the end of the Rail Trail from Hancock, and then loop back on the C and O, since there is easy access between the two. On my trip from Pittsburgh to DC, I actually blew out my last tube and tire on the rail trail. I actually did not mind (except for the blisters!) because who can complain about walking 10 miles on a sunny afternoon on a trail with great sites. It gave me the chance for a great photo opportunity of the rock formations witnessed along the way. Offering a smooth ride and many different sites, the Western Maryland Rail Trail is worth experiencing. Also, I highly recommend looking at their website which demonstrates the beauty of this area and trail. Points of Interest: Hancock MD, Apple Orchards, Cut through cliffs, and even a cave (bared).
